Sony MDR-EX71SLW : The Review

I've been purposefully holding out a review on these beauties because I wanted to spend an entire day using them at work. I received them from Amazon on Friday (bit of long delivery time...but I was in no real hurry for them)

What you get:

1 x Headphones
3 x Differently sized in-ear pieces
1 x Mp3 player soft pouch
1 x Ear-bud traveling protector
1 x Small extention cord (for MP3 players that do not have remotes as standard)

Styling:

Pictures I've found of these headphones do not do them justice. I expected them to be a lot bigger, but fortunately they are smaller and thinner then the standard iPod ones. They look a lot sexier as well...very discrete, with beautiful chrome detailing.

Comfort:

Arguably, this is just as, if not more important then the sound quality produced. As you might remember, I have a personal hatred to the standard iPod headphones. I pleased to say that these are an incredible improvement from them! After wearing them for roughly 7 hours, my ears feel no pain! The soft spongy design of the ear cups mean that they can adjust to fit any ear size. One thing I have discovered from this is that my left ear hole is smaller then my right one!!

Sound:

Crisp, clear and bassy. Those are the three words I'm choosing to sum up the sound quality. As the design fits snugly in your ear channel, you are fully exposed to a whole range of frequencies not covered by your standard earphones. For instance, having listened to Damien Rice - Older Chests dozens of times, I only realised today that there are very faint children whispers throughout the song. Needless to say I did attract some attention from colleagues at work when I was looking over my shoulder expecting to see a few kids!!
The best way I can describe the sound quality, is to push and to hold your existing earphones in. These earphones truly do make you feel "surrounded" by the music playing.

Things to note:

Noise cancellation :- Being in-ear design means that you are severely limited to what you can hear around you. Block your earholes and breath deeply, that's what it is like when all you have is the earphones on and no music playing! It's like you're in your own little world....

Volume : - Cranked up to the max, the earphones still sound awesome! However, it does becoming deafening...especially if you have your Pod uncapped. What's great is that you can now listen at half the volume of your standard earphones...maintaining the same level of loudness.

Earwax:- eewwww!! Unfortunately, the in-ear design acts like a cue-tip...so make sure you have thoroughly clean ears, otherwise you will embarrass yourself when you take them out to talk to someone - like myself :-(

Synopsis:

Just get them!

Monday Movie Madness

Monday again....that means movie reviews. Been a bit of a couch potato this week, so I've managed to watch 4 excellent flicks:

Chopper
Genre: Drama/Thriller
Tagline: The truth, the half-truth and nothing like the truth
Synopsis: Follows the chronicles of Australia's most prolific criminal Mark Brandon 'Chopper' Read
Review: One of grittiest, fascinating and frightening films I've seen in a long time! To think this guy is actually still alive is mind-blowing. Having nine best selling books in Australia shows how big he really is. Although not strictly a biography of his life, the film does depict some of his "alleged" crimes, including a famous killing outside a nightclub called Bojangles. Apparently, thousands of people flock there every year to reenact the same scenario...sending "Chopper" the photos. Definitely one to watch!

I heart huckabees
Genre: Comedy
Tagline: An existential comedy
Synopsis: One man's search to find the answers that keep you up in the middle of the night

Review: Very difficult to explain this one. It reminds me of when I was trying to explain Donnie Darko to someone. Put simply, you have to watch the film to fully appreciate any written words about it. If you like extremely clever and complex comedies then this is right up your alley, however if you're into your slapsticks then steer clear! Mark Wahlberg has really carved a name for himself from his early New Kids on the Block days...playing a more memorable part then the main character Albert (Jason Schwartzman). One for the geeks...

Buffalo Soldiers
Genre: Comedy

Tagline: Steal all that you can steal. A story so outrageous you couldn't make it up
Synopsis: A criminal subculture operates among U.S. soldiers stationed in West Germany just before the fall of the Berlin wall
Review: I was expecting a laughing out aloud comedy here, but again, I found myself watching a very sutle, clever piece of work. The film caused some controversy when it was released because of the whole Iraq thing, which is probably why it is not widely known. The flick generally shows U.S soldiers in a lazy, dysfunctional and criminal manor....which is why I enjoyed it so much! It emphasizes the profiting from drug dealing and weapon trading that some of the soldiers must benefit from. A humorous stance on a very real way of life for some of the more intelligent soldiers...

Meet the Fockers
Genre: Comedy
Tagline: And you thought your parents were embarrassing
Synopsis: All hell breaks loose when the Byrnes family meets the Focker family for the first time

Review: A very satisfying sequel to the hilarious Meet the Parents. Too many funny scenes to mention here, but honestly, if you've seen the first one...go see this NOW!

Pick out of the week: Buffalo Soldiers

iPoo headphones

As you may remember from my review, the iPod headphones are poo. Obviously the best headphones you can get are the headband types (Beyerdynamic and Sennheiser models being the best). However, I don't want to be walking the streets with earcans stuck to my face looking like an absolute prat! So, I present to you the best compromise between audiophile heaven and practicality:

Sony MDR-EX71SLW

These Sony ear-bud-boys will be arriving soon....so expect to see a comprehensive review in the next few days!
